There's going to be some pretty good games today, even a couple of the inter-conference ones. Pittsburgh at Atlanta should be good, though I wouldn't trust the Falcons to win a game they need; they're really lucky it's in the Georgia Dome. Green Bay at Buffalo should be like the Broncos-Bills game last week: GB takes an early lead and Buffalo surges back but can't quite make it. Kyle Orton is the best garbage-numbers QB in the NFL, he did it with the Broncos the year they fired McDaniels.
Broncos are playing the Chargers in San Diego today. I was more nervous about this game before I saw the Pats beat them. I know the Broncos aren't as good as the Pats right now, but boy did the Chargers look banged up. I think the Broncos will be able to come out of there with a win.
Also, REALLY? Really, NFL, the Thursday night game coming up is Titans-Jags? Whoever decided that would be a good nationally televised game must be a heavy drinker. I guess the best we can hope for is that every once in a while, bad team + bad team = instant classic. Don't believe me? This YouTube video is a recap from 2009 when the 1-8 Detroit Lions hosted the 1-8 Cleveland Browns. Almost no one saw this game (I think it was blacked out in Detroit), and it turned out to be one of the best games of the year, if not decade.
In case you don't care to watch the video, here's the synopsis: the Browns built a big lead in the first quarter, but the Lions rallied in the 2nd to make it 27-24 at the half. They traded leads in the second half, then at the end of the 4th quarter Matthew Stafford threw a pick that was nullified on a Browns penalty. Unfortunately, Stafford separated his non-throwing shoulder on the play and had to come out. Then, the Browns called a time out, which allowed Stafford to come back in for an untimed play and he hit Brandon Pettigrew for a TD and the win. The QB's combined for 726 yards and 9 TDs (Stafford also threw 2 picks). Steve Sabol of NFL Films said the Lions' game winning drive was the most dramatic film he has seen in over 30 years.
