Today we have one of my two recent Mopar convertible purchases, a Johnny Lightning Mopar or No Car series 1967 Plymouth GTX Convertible in a beautiful silver with black top & interior (that interior would be a scorcher in the summer sun!).
As I went searching through the thousands of photos I’ve taken at car shows over many years for a picture of a GTX to use as a background today, I came to the realization that the GTX doesn’t get anywhere near the love it deserves. I have hundreds of pictures of the GTX’s sister the Road Runner, and pictures of just three GTX’s.
One very nice detail in this JL casting that I think I’ve never seen in any other ‘60s or ‘70s Mopar diecast is the Pentastar badge at the bottom of the fender behind the front wheel. It’s too large here, but I expect that’s simply a result of scaling it down and still having it visible. That Pentastar badge was something that Chrysler used for a while. It was always in the same place and only on the passenger’s side, on every car they made for years. A true Mopar restoration will always have one there.
I added one to my car not long after I bought her, and I’ve only had two people notice it who then commented about it, both of them judges at car shows. If you look very closely at the red GTX in my first picture, you’ll see one below the HEMI badge behind the front wheel.
