It all started when I saw an article on Jalopnik about this epic Baja Galaxie.
When I saw it I knew that it would be perfect for a HW Custom build. I’ve had everything I needed for a while, but after seeing the Baja-style Charger in FF7 (below), I decided I needed to get it going.
Here’s how I decided to start. First off I needed a 64 Galaxie, at the time I initially thought about this project, the custom 64 galaxie was no longer on the pegs:
This meant I had to sacrifice the one in my collection. I really liked the way the green galaxie looked, but I had to sacrifice it for the greater good.
I then needed a beefy off-road chassis with knobbly tires. Enter the Muppets Baja Breaker:
(The Bronco in the pic has been customized already)
I needed to make sure the wheelbases were as similar as possible to make sure I would do minimal work on making them fit together. I also tested a jeep trailblazer and a land rover, the baja breaker was a perfect fit.
Well after taking everything apart and stripping the metal down to nothing, tonight was the time for the destruction work. I would say it was fabrication night, but all I did was cut and grind stuff away haha. My grinding stone is nubby now... Anywho, here’s how everything looked after I cut a lot:
As seen above, I had to cut the fascia and rear bits of the galaxie off its chassis. Thankfully it was plastic. The Baja breaker chassis is unfortunately metal...and took A LOT of grinding to get it where I needed it. There was also a lot done in the galaxie body.
As seen above, I had to cut out two holes for the massive tires that would go in. Also grinded down the spoiler that was previously there.
Also had to greatly enlarge the wheel wells so the tires from the baja breaker would fit.
On the left we see the original baja breaker chassis. A second one had to be sacrificed for an extra set of wheels... As you can see I had to cut and grind a lot off the chassis...mainly so the interior would fit and so the front and rear bits of the galaxie would fit.
In the end...I am super proud of how this is turning out. Below is how it looks dry-fitted together.
I’m extremely stoked to do some fabrication work next for a light bar, roll cage, and brush guard. I’ve done this much, I might as well do some more to make it look like the real thing:
Once it’s done, it will be able to dominate El-Uly’s Baja racing class ;)
