Ok so I couldn’t wait I had to free the beast!
The Superfast line was released in 1969 to compete with the new boys on the block Hot Wheels. The old style wheels where no longer acceptable that couldn’t complete with the faster Hot Wheels.
The heavy sold hard plastic thick axel wheels where replace with hollow thin Axel wheels to be used on the track sets. Unlike Johnny Lightning they didn’t copy the same style they used a solid axel threw the wheel that would later become the standard.
This 50th Anniversary model VW was never used in the Superfast line but it pays homage to No. 34 (A) Volkswagen Camper/Caravtte(was retooled to the Camper)
It’s a bit of a shame they couldn’t get the doors the open the right way but this was done to have more support cause the older ones that you find on eBay or flea markets are often missing the doors. It will be interesting to see if they re-tool this to a delivery van or change the interior to more of a Camper look.
Speaking of delivery it’s a new tooled base that was used on the VW delivery/transport van
