Car Week: The '70s - Dorito Edition

The ‘70s were a weird period for cars. Styling went in all sorts of different directions. Smog regulations began and the gas crisis hit, so engines were getting choked down and horsepower was a bad thing in the eyes of manufacturers. So choosing what to post for today made me think long and hard. Thinking that hard made me hungry, so I went to grab myself a snack out of the pantry. I reached for my go-to bag of Doritos when it hit me. The answer was staring me straight in the face: ROTARY

I give you, the Tomica Limited Mazda RX-7 Racing. This is the FB chassis built from 1978 - 1985. The paint scheme you see is based on the 1979 RX-7 GTU entered in the 1979 24 Hours of Daytona. The car finished 5th overall and took home the GTU class win! And that’s quite a feat considering that was it’s first year in competition, and it’s main competitor was the Porsche 911 GTU!
