The D Type was created specifically to race by Jaguar. It was built from 1954 to 1957. In 1955, 1956, and 1957, a D Type won Le Mans, so this car is sort of Britain’s GT40, just with the baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and all around ‘Murica-ness removed. I say that because, unlike the GT40, the D Type was powered by a small(ish), very British XK -series DOHC inline 6 cylinder, not a great - big - ‘Murican V8. The XK series engine had an advanced valve and head configuration, and the D Type had disc brakes, so the car was pretty modern for 1955. Overall, 87 D Type’s were made; 18 factory team cars, 53 customer cars, and 16 XKSS cars.
