Tomica time again. My previous JDM Tomica review was an early casting, today we examine one that is fairly new, relative to most of the material in my collection. This is Tomica 33-4, the Toyota Celica XX 2800 GT. This casting entered the range in April, 1982, and remained until May, 1986. As expected from Tomica of this period, it is a quality item that nicely represents the real car:
This car, known as the Celica Supra (A60) elsewhere, was called the XX in Japan. The 2800 GT was top of the line. This casting is from what I call the “sunroof era” of Tomica, when many models had this nice feature. There is ample detail from all angles, with maybe a little softness in the detail especially around hard angles, as Tomica seemed to develop over time. Scale is a claimed 1:64, likely accurate. Of course, this model has the crisp glazing, springy suspension, and snappy door action we expect from vintage Tomica. The healthy coat of red and black paintwork sets off the gold wheels as a real piece of 80s magic:
The creamy beige colored interior also works well with this paint scheme, and doors open to show detailed seating and an accurate steering wheel:
Front and rear have similarly nice detail:
The underside is metal for heft and a quality feel, and also has significant detail:
This example lives in a nice original black box:
I am definitely glad to have this in my collection. Matchbox and Hot Wheels also had similar Supras, but I think the Tomica is the most precise. I also have a silver example, which will show up in a review someday. I remember these “wedge” Supras from when I was a kid, I liked them then too. I also like the sunroof feature on this car, and the general paint scheme. :
On further review, I see TE71 Xin reviewed this casting some time ago:
And some (USA spec) 1:1s, from bringatrailer, curbsideclassic, a gold wheels example I couldn’t pass up from rkmotorscharlotte.com, and a couple of JDM XXs from toyota-club.net and celicasupra.com:
