Surprise Saturday: Siku KTM 1290 Super Duke R

On this cold damp Saturday morning, it is time again for something different. I don’t often feature modern castings, but this is one I couldn’t pass up. Today we examine a Siku I picked up on my recent trip to Europe. This is the Siku casting of a KTM 1290 Super Duke R. When I saw this on the pegs, I just had to have it:

This is a bike I like a lot in full sized form, and when I saw it in the toy section of a department store in Hamburg, it was an easy purchase. I didn’t see it on the pegs in any other Siku display in Europe, maybe it isn’t a common or popular casting. Anyway, It’s a great piece. I am unsure of scale, but it fits well with HW Ducatis and other Siku bikes, a larger scale than most small diecast, maybe around 1:50 or so. As one can see, the casting detail, accurate tampos, and realistic looking textured plastic on the seat all give an accurate and precise feel to the model. The realistic tire tread is a nice touch along with the steerable handlebars/front wheel, and the working kickstand is terrific - no comical wide tires like on HW sportbikes. These are more expensive than HW or Matchbox, I think this was 4 or 5 Euro, and you get what you pay for:

Front and rear have similar detail, and it really poses well on the kickstand:

The base is marked with the maker and I assume a production date code, and shows off detail:

Modern Siku are packaged in a way I wish others would follow - DLM is not an issue, as the plastic bubble is held in place with tabs instead of glue, so you can remove your model and put it back in the package if you wish:

I am definitely glad to have happened upon this sweet little casting. I like the bike - an amazing machine at just over 400 lbs with 180hp, but with much less aggressive ergonomics than a sportbike. The full scale bike entered production in 2014, so this is a current model. I couldn’t ask for a nicer souvenir:
