[REVIEW] Lesney Matchbox Jaguar XK140

Lesney Matchbox time is here again, back to our regularly scheduled programming. Today we examine a model that is a perfect representative of its era. This is Lesney Matchbox 32a, the Jaguar XK140. This casting entered the range in 1957, remaining until 1962. It may appear familiar to some, but it has yet to be seen here:

One may recall this model from not long ago, during LaLD Car Week:

The red example is from the end of the production run, while this white variant is from the beginning. 1957 was a time when the Matchbox line was gaining momentum, and one can see why via this casting. This is a hollow casting, as interiors were still a few years in the future, along with glazing. However, this simplicity lends some charm, and there is a combination of mellow softness and ample fine line casting detail, along with excellent proportions. I estimate scale to be around 1:64. From all angles, there’s no mistaking what kind of car this is:

Front and rear have similar detail. Hand applied silver trim has survived the past 60 years reasonably well, and the red accents on the rear lights, a common feature of the era, add appeal:

The base is basic, as was the style of the time, and contains identifying data:

This example is lucky enough to live in a nice original type B2 box. With this box type and metal wheels, this model was likely made in 1957 or early 1958:

This is a model I am pleased to have in my collection - I have 3 varieties of this casting. It is an attractive piece which shows the appeal had by the Matchbox line of this time - these castings were the best on the market in small scale:
