One may notice today would usually be a Lesney Matchbox review, instead, let’s mix things up a little. Today we examine Siku 1338/1341, the Range Rover. This casting entered the range in 1978, remaining until 1986, is an excellent model:
I figured to head off running out of unboxed Lesney Matchbox models for future reviews, I’d throw in some other brands for this series. This Siku is a lovely casting, and worthy of inclusion. Based on the classic original 2 door Range Rover, this model features excellent fine line casting detail, and accurate proportion. As it is a period “Super Series” model, scale is claimed to be 1:55, and probably accurate. This casting features quality glazing, firm suspension, and doors with fine shut lines. Old style Siku wheels add character. The tow hook and the sailboard attached to the roof add play value - I was tempted to assemble it, but decided to keep it original and leave it in its original rubber bands. From all angles, this shows excellent workmanship:
Doors open to reveal a detailed interior, and the steering wheel cast in a contrasting color is a nice touch:
Front and rear feature similar quality detail, with the headlights cast in metal in contrast to the grille adding realism:
The base is metal, typical for Siku, and features identifying data and some technical data as well, an old school Siku trait:
I am undoubtedly pleased to have this model in my collection. I enjoyed Siku when I was a kid - they were more expensive than mainstream brands, and seemed exotic, I only had a few in my fleet. I found this at a local toy show, housed in a plastic case, for $5 - I couldn’t resist it. In this color with gear on the roof, and being an iconic vehicle, is an appealing casting:
