- Back to the Future (Hover)
- McLaren P1
- Nissan 180SX
- Jaguar F-Type Project 7
- Volkswagen Caddy
Even with some worthy candidates that did NOT make the list (M4, NSX), I felt that the Model Year 2015 was a bit of a “down” year for Hot Wheel mainlines. Considering what we know of MY2016, I think this opinion has been mostly validated. Either that, or I am just way too jaded.

The Volkswagen’s strongest attribute was nostalgia. The actual vehicle was never anything special, but it can still bring a smile to your face.

Nissan’s 180SX also played the nostalgia card, but a bit more obscurely. After the massive success of the Datsuns I’m sure Hot Wheels is scrambling to find anything remotely similar. It also had pop-up lights.

My favorite contemporary designs are almost all Jaguars. I love how they have transitioned to such a modern look without losing any of their appeal. They look better than practically any car you can buy new today, in my opinion. Yet, even that noted, the coupe is fantastic and makes the convertible (almost) frumpy by comparison.

The McLaren was stellar, with spot on proportions and solid choices for the first two colors: orange and silver. Blue is on its way next, too. Like the Porsche 993 GT2 or the LaFerrari, it was a model that when first encountered on the pegs you knew you had to grab.
So it must be the P1 right? It honestly would have been, had not such strong arguments been made by Uly and BJ.

The DeLorean has already been done plenty of times. In both standard issues and tied to a certain movie franchise. It was even a Super TH in this same year! Yet one thing stands out:
October 21, 2015
Many of us were kids when we first saw Back to the Future 2, and this movie blew our minds with its vision of 2015: hoverboards, holographic movies, automatic shoelaces.....but mostly it was a line from the first film that sticks so much that there is no need to look it up:
Roads? Where we are going we don’t need roads!
Having plenty of experience modeling the DeLorean, Hot Wheels got Hover Mode just right with the wheels parallel to the ground and a Mr. Fusion in back. It was the perfect mainline for 2015. And it cost approximately one dollar, just like 25 years ago.
