Teutonic Tuesday: Comeback Edition

Man I haven’t done a Teutonic Tuesday for a long time. I always end up remembering it THE NEXT DAY (epic fail). Not this time, and I got something rather interesting.

I have this Porsche 550 Spyder since I was 6 years old and end paying no attention to it until recently when I rediscovered it in a drawer where kept my diecasts from dust. No idea what brand made this but I’m 99% certain it’s a 1/64.

When I held it in my hand all I can think is: This thing is tiny!!! Just look at how it compares to the 993 GT2!

But there is a reason for it, because in real life, the Porsche 550 Spyder IS tiny. It’s really a road legal go kart, it weighs less than a ton (2000 lbs) completely wet and Porsche went to great lengths to make it as light as possible by making it as small as it legally allow, extensive use of aluminum for the engine, dry sump lubrication like on race cars and some exotics we’re seeing today, and a tubular chassis that mimic the structure of an airplane wing. It was also a time that safety wasn’t a big concern when it comes to automobiles. This thing have no seat belts or a roll bar let alone airbags, ABS, or crumple zones (these were beyond this car’s era) and no shame. It truly is “a rebel without a cause.”

I decided to do some scaling to make sure it is 1/64, I put my diorama figurine right next to it to represent an average size adult.

It looked pretty precise since that is approximately the height of a Porsche 550 Spyder next to an average human.

To further proof the true scale of this car, take a look at these 2 pictures:

I compared a Boxster Spyder to the 550 Spyder and the dimensions are virtually identical to the real picture above.

This is a beautiful casting, very well detailed and it deserves to be featured more in future posts, I owe a huge apology to this casting for neglecting it all these years.
