Have you re-purchased a childhood favorite? This is one of mine.

I had a few favorite diecasts — among them an orange Vanagon camper, a Matchbox Premiere ‘90s Camero with real rubber tires, and this Hot Wheels Lexus SC400.

I knew next to nothing about cars then; I loved this one simply because of its dark red metallic paint. It was glossy and smooth and caught the light just so.

In retrospect, it resembles the the real-life Lexus in theory only. Its lack of detail and exaggerated curves make it look like it’s been dipped in the sort of lacquer your local dive bar has used to embed coins or bottle caps in an easy-to-clean tabletop.

Some years later, as I searched for my first bought-with-my-own-money car, I limited my search to 3 models. A sensible late-model Accord coupe with a warranty; a Lexus SC300; and an Acura Legend coupe. The Accord felt cheap and unrefined; the Lexus had a bloated Buick-like interior; the Legend was just right. I still own that Acura 11 years and 130k later. I’ve even duplicated it in 6-speed form.

But perhaps, if I'd found a Lexus SC300/400 in such a striking burgandy, my personal automotive history would've been different...
