If you collect Aurora Thunderjet slot cars, you know that the ‘68 El Camino is a pretty rare and valuable piece. And as much as I like original Thunderjets, I certainly don’t mind a well-done replica, just as long as it’s not represented as an original. So when I came across this resin-cast El Camino at a show years ago, I was interested. Only problem was that during the casting process, this body developed some air bubbles near the bottom edges. I looked at it and saw not a defect but an opportunity...
Some gray primer, some mismatched body panels, and a dab of rust-colored paint later, I had my very own slot car version of a mullet haircut (Business in front, party in the back!).
Since I got this, I have acquired an original Aurora El Camino and two nice Auto World replicas, but none have the character of this old pile...
