I’ve been in a rusty mood lately. I’m fascinated by weathering techniques like salt chipping, using hairspray, diluted white paint for dust effects, brown washes... Well, you get the idea.
So here is my first foray into the world of weathering, a 1957 GMC Stepside. I never intended to turn it into a little diorama, but I kind of ran with the idea after talking to Mycarneverruns. He even suggested having a tree grow through the truck bed, but I couldn’t find a suitable tree. I did find this large one, which at least looks pretty cool sitting next to the car.
I started with a standard green Stepside, took a hammer to the rear to give it some age (this came back to bite me big time, because none of the other pieces would quite fit back onto the body, leading to me using a torch on the interior/truckbed to shape it back into the body, and cutting out the entire middle part of the base), drilled out one of the headlights to make it look like it’s missing, scratched and fogged up the glass, added mud, rust, missing paint, dust, and flat tires. For the tires I used a torch to heat up the wheel, then pressed it down onto a flat surface. Came out quite well! Unfortunately you can’t really see the tires anymore because of the sand...

For my next rusty/dusty project I am definitely going to try my hand at salt chipping. It actually looks like a lot of fun to do.
As always, let me know what you think!
