It’s a busy day today on the subject of Germans imported from Japan, but hopefully no one is tired yet of these beautiful cars.
Much like Jobjoris, I jumped on Hobbylink’s website as soon as I got the heads-up from Small Scale Sydney that the Porsche 911 2.7RS by Tomica Premium was up for preorder.
And Friday afternoon a very large box containing one very small box finally arrived from Japan.
I’ve never been the biggest Tomica fan, mostly because I feel very strongly that in their mainline the wheels greatly let down the usually fantastic castings. And that is kind of sad. I have not received one Tomica yet that I have not immediately swapped a new set of rubber onto. Granted, the sample size is incredibly small (a grant total of 5: three Porsche 991 911s, a Toyota IQ-turned-Aston Martin Cygnet, and a Spyker C8 Laviolette), but still!
The game slightly changed when I got my first TLV from Plasticprints, and then this Premium 2.7RS. Now I at least know that Tomica is very capable of making insane little cars WITH great wheels!
(Disclaimer: I thought the wheels were a little bit TOO red with not enough definition, so I added some black wash to make the highs and lows stand out.)
Since we’ve seen this car before many times, I figured I’d put it next to the opposite end of the family tree, a 997 GT3RS by Minichamps (this one was imported from Breda, the Netherlands, not Japan).
Let’s compare, shall we? 2.7L, 210HP flat-six engine in 1974 versus 3.8L, 450HP flat-six in 2010. Ducktail in 1974, HUGE adjustable wing in 2010. 1075kg in 1974, 1590kg in 2010. These are the differences. But both sound BANANAS!!
