The F1 GTR is cool and all, but sometimes you need something more practical. Something you can take your spouse and one kid to the shops in. Using a bespoke set of grocery bags, obviously.

This is the reason why there needed to be a road car version of the excellent Hot Wheels McLaren F1 GTR. Here is what I have so far!

One cool thing about turning this thing stock again, is that I am finding out all the little tiny details that are different between the two. It’s not simply about cutting off the front splitter and rear wing, but the side skirts as well, reshaping the front air inlets (including filling in the large central one), the little indentation the road car chin has, the lack of rear fender vents, and the rear deck lid panels. I’m trying to address them all as much as I can, including the case of largerearwheelitis that this casing is afflicted with.

This is the progress I’ve made so far.

Wing: gone. Side skirts: gone. Front fascia work: filled and filed. The air inlets are tricky and I think I’m going to leave them alone now for fear of messing them up too much. I think I can do the rest of the illusion with paint.

To equalize the wheel arches I glued in a thin strip of aluminium into the rear arch so the radii of both arches are more or less equal, then filed the curve to correct the shape, and filled in the gaps with superglue. After that was sanded flush, I primed the car to check the results.

Not too shabby so far, I think! As you can see, the fender vents need a little bit of attention, and I need more panel lines on the deck lid, but for the rest, we’re there!

As for color, I had initially thought about doing Rowan Atkinson’s formercar, the only maroon F1 ever made, but that might be too dark. Silver has been brought up, but I’m open to any suggestion! Papaya Orange might be hard to find a close match to, though.

Also, any wheel suggestions are welcome!
