EDIT: 5/10/19 Happy 510 day everyone!
The story behind this car is the product of mutual love for diecast cars and 1:1 Datsun 510's. I myself have about a half dozen friends who own them and race them. I myself campaigned one in a vintage autocross class and won that series a few years back. I love the sound and feel of classic naturally aspirated Japanese machinery!
Enough about me, this custom was built for my shops Snap On tool distributor and fellow diecast collector Rich. Now Rich is the kind of collector who likes, no needs, to keep Hot Wheels in the original unmolested cards. So when he comes into our shop each week to see myself and TFritch DLMing and customizing HW and other diecast he gets a little jealous. Rich also owns a beautiful blue 510 Datsun which gave me the idea to do something special for the guy. He won’t even see this until Tuesday when he comes by our shop.
This cast started as Cool Classics 510 because I wanted a metal base and a black interior with clear glass (looking for a replacement now BTW if anyone has an extra). I stripped the body and filed off all the casting marks. I did very little to the interior, deleted the cage since this is a street cage and detailed the steering wheel. The base got gloss black, masked the chin spoiler and shot it to match the body, lastly detailed exhaust and sealed with Testors Wet Look Clear. The body is Testors Lacquer color Star Spangled Banner Blue metallic and didn’t need a clear coat but I cleared it anyhow to seal the details which I’m still using Sharpies for. Wheels are RRs from the Supervan just Sharpied silver, stock axles, no height modification, it still rolls! Enjoy!
