Throwback Thursday: Grumpy's Toy XI

This Pro-Stock ‘74 Chevy Vega hails from the Hot Wheels 2011 Vintage Racing series, although Bill Jenkins’ ‘72 Vega was easily his most successful car, the Grumpy’s Toy XI represented here, which he built in 1974, had the most lasting influence on Pro Stock chassis design.

Built by Jenkins Competition spin-off Speed Research and Development, Bill Jenkins’ radical 1974 Pro Stock Vega, “Grumpy’s Toy XI,” was the first completely tube-framed Pro Stock racer and the first to employ MacPherson strut front suspension and a dry sump oiling system. With weight breaks favoring the Ford racers, “Grumpy’s Toy XI” was the only Chevrolet Pro Stock to win an event in 1974.

Not many old school drag racers get obituaries in the NY Times, but then not many were Ivy League engineering graduates who continued to bring successful innovation to the sport.
