LaLD Car Week - '60s: The Georgia Shaker

The ‘60s is here! Time for muscle cars and their huge thirsty V8s to rumble onto the stage. Drag racing was drawing in crowds and talents, and winning cars drove sales on the showroom floor. Big names from Detroit were incentivised to build factory “race cars” in order to conquer the quarter-mile and sell more cars.

Case in point: this GMP 1:18 1967 Ford R-Code 427 Fairlane. It’s a scale replica - complete with race livery - of the late Hubert Platt’s “the Georgia Shaker” Super Stock racecar. I’m always a sucker for graphics of yesteryear and it’s hard for me to turn down a period drag stripe demon with all the period-correct fixtures.

Like like the SS/B racecars from that time, the rear side windows are decorated with sponsor stickers. When you roll up the driver’s side window, you are greeted by an additional “sticker” from a certain forged aluminium parts maker of that period.

Opening the door reveals a tachometer located atop the dash, tasked with an important job of informing the driver when to shift for the best ETs. My only complains of the interior would be how low the mirror hangs and how comically huge it is.

While Mr. Platt might not be with us anymore, it’s nice on GMP’s part to commemorate and preserve a part of ‘60s drag racing history in diecast form. A 1:1 replica restoration is underway, which likely means the original 1:1s have been lost to history. Regardless, his legend lives on and Georgia continues to get shaken.
