Late Edition: Teutonic Tuesday and a surprise

The 917 is one hell of a race car. Its significance in advancing motorsports is unquestioned. The first car that won LeMans for Porsche. An aerodynamic response to the previously unlimited capacity that was taking over endurance racing. Designed by the infamous Hans Mezger the tube frame weighed just 42kg and was filled with pressurized gas so that leaks could be detected. Extensive use of titanium and magnesium helped keep the weight down. As magnificent as the 917 was, HWs effort to recreate the vehicle in 1:64 scale is a disappointment (in my eyes). The reverse rake kills this model for me, the wheel choice is terrible. This car epitomizes my love-hate relationship I have with certain models and their diecast counterparts.

I present 3 versions of the 917 with a wonderful book I just acquired from evilbay. Photography by Jeff Zwart and interviews with 17 of the 917 drivers from their golden era. This is one of the few times where I have ‘won’ and auction and gotten more than I expected. The book is signed by Jeff Zwart and quick Vic Elford! Awesome.

Pics below. Let me know your thoughts on the 917 casting, maybe I am being too critical.

PS: I am still super excited about the new 917 LH casting. Maybe it will get a premium treatment.
