Tomica on TV

My first post (thanks again for authorship, Philip!) on LaLD, so hopefully I won’t break any rules :)

There’s a tv program on NHK World TV called Samurai Wheels which features vehicles in Japan and is hosted by former F1 driver Ukyo Katayama (and two other people).

What does this have to do with diecast models? The March 4 episode had a short feature on Tomica! Unfortunately I couldn’t find a streaming link or online video, but you can check out some screen captures on the NHK site. The Tomy modeler interview for the feature gave a nice explanation on how you can’t just shrink a car down to scale; you have to modify the proportions to make it look correct because of the shorter distance you normally view a diecast compared to the real vehicle. They also use 3D modeling for prototyping (imagine if the 3D files for the protos got out into the real world...), which saves a lot of time and money.

So check your local listings in case you get Samurai Wheels. Even if you can’t find a rerun, the show is fun to watch if you like JDM cars.
