The Trabant is an odd car. Some love it, some hate it. I particularly like it; that’s why I’ve attended the Parade of Trabants in DC for the last few years.

For those that admire the Trabi, as it’s sometimes known, it’s essentially the communist VW Beetle. As the Bug was to the FRG, the Trabant was to the GDR. The little, semi-reliable people’s car of East Germany. Some also admire it for the fact that it was a pioneering feat in duroplast, the car’s windows being made of a tough, receycled plastic.

For those that hate it, it’s a cramped, unreliable, cheaply-built turd with the engine of a lawnmower. I believe it’s on both Edmunds and TIME’s list of the worst cars ever built.
