Hot Sixty 4th: A Car Christmas Carol 2

For this showcase of DLM cars, I will be continuing the story about a man who owns a truck and what happened to him afterwards. Adapted partly from Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol”, here is my 35th post from the newly released VW Double cab truck from M2.

Previously our story ended when the 2 ghosts from the past and present slowly vanished before Mr. Rooge eyes and was foretold that he will be visited by another spirit.

And now the story continues.

I stared for a long time at the dark street and there was no sign of either one of the spirits. I wondered if this was a dream. No! More of a nightmare. Am I actually in my bed? Did I fall asleep on the street? Am I now awake? Since everything seems so real at this point I therefore concluded that I probably had a moment of hallucination.

I began to continue my journey and suddenly I felt a tingling at the back of my neck. I listened but did not hear anything. My mind tells me to move on, but at the same time is telling me to look back. As I can no longer hold my curiosity and with my heart beating fast, I slowly turned around. The fog is thick but slowly I see a shape forming. It began to take shape just like the 2 previous ghosts, but more darker and sinister looking and the light—that light on top of its head glowed like an eye of a cyclops. Inside there was no one, yet it was glowing brightly.

The thing was shrouded in black on top and part of its body, which gave it a more eerie look.

“I am in the presence of the Ghost of VW yet to come?” I asked.

This time the truck answered not, but pointed onward with its cyclops light.

“You are about to show me shadows of the things that have not happened, but will happen in the time before us.” I pursued.

The spirit moved slightly closer and the beam from the cyclops light flickered a few times.

I hope it was an affirmation and I followed the beam of the light where I entered into a non-familiar area. I looked around and saw the name of the street. Then I saw someone coming out of a house but she was just standing there as if waiting for someone. I moved closer to look at who she is and when she turned her head, I was surprised that she was the lady who I sold the truck. I panicked but realized that this was all a vision. Then I saw a man walking towards her. She gave him a smile.

“How was your day?” the lady asked.

“It couldn’t be worse.” Said the man.

“Did you go?”

“Yes my dear,” returned the man. “I wish you could have gone. It would have done you good to see how green a place it is. But you’ll see it often. I promised him that I would walk there every week. Our little baby.” cried the man. “It’s my fault I was not able to to provide the necessary funds to get the medication needed.”

“It is not your fault my dear. We can have another child someday.” Said the lady as she hug him and began to cry as well.

I don’t know why, but somehow I felt tears rolling down from my eyes.

Spirit,” said I. “something informs me that our parting moment is at hand. I have seen the wrong that I have done. But have they not tried to at least have the truck sold and use that to fund for the healing of the child?”

The ghost pointed its light towards a couple of man talking in front of a gate.

One of then said, “I managed to finally bring that rusting bucket here.”

“Will the city still issue a fine to them?” asked the other.

“I’m not sure but that thing is a sore eye alright. The city is glad to have it removed from the premise.”

“Let’s call it a day.”

The two men left and I wondered what they were discussing about, so I asked the spirit. The truck remained silent but slowly moved towards the gate. It opened and I went in.

Pointing its beam among the piles of rotting and dilapidated cars, I saw what used to be my VW truck rusting away. I then understood.

Then the spirit transported me to another place. I was inside a room with only the table lamp as its light source. Beside it was a hospital bed, and lying on it was a sickly old man. My eyes wandered to the only light source and on the table was an opened diary. My eyes looked upon the written words.

“I am writing this for probably the last time. I have done wrong a long time ago and have caused unbearable pain. I know it was due to my greed and dishonesty but I did nothing. Now before I die I would like to confess that I have cheated a lady to whom I have sold my truck to many years ago. She used up all her savings to buy my truck in order to give it to her husband so he could use it for his work but I knew, I KNEW this truck was not going to last and now without money their sick child did not live to see another day.”

My eyes suddenly were wide open. As I was turning around, I heard voices coming from the outside running towards the room. As they reached the patient and were trying to revive him, I saw a mirror of myself: older, sickly and about to die, if not already dead. I ran outside and was back with the spirit.

“No spirit.” and I kneeled on the ground. “Assure me that I yet may change these shadows you have shown me, by an altered life.”

The spirit said nothing but did a 180 degree turn, and I knew it was leaving me.

Holding up my hand in a desperate prayer to have this fate reversed, I tried to grab the bumper to prevent it from leaving; but then I realized that what I am holding to is not a bumper but a steering wheel. I looked around and realized I was in my car. I then remembered that I drank at the party and must have fallen asleep in my car.

Was it all a dream or was it real? It was still dark, so I looked at my watch. 5:00 am. And the date indicated was Christmas day. I was back in the present. I realized that I have the chance to alter the future. I quickly drove home and opened my safe and counted the money I had. I placed them in a duffle bag. I still remember the name of the street where the lady lived and drove straight over there.

I arrived and feeling nervous, I knocked at the door. The door opened and the child looked at me curiously and asked me who I was.

“I...I was wondering if your mother is available?”

Before the child could speak, the lady appeared.

“Yes?”

“ I don’t know if you remember me but I was the man that sold you a truck last year.”

The lady finally recognized me but was puzzled by my presence. I informed her I would like to buy the truck back. She said that the truck was not working but if I would like, she can sell it back at a small price. I turned down her offer but before she could speak I handed her the duffle bag and told her I would accept nothing less than what’s in it and told her the amount.

She was surprised by the amount and said that it was way more than what she paid when the truck was still working. I told her that I included the interest when the truck was in her possession. I then handed her my business card and said that if her husband ever needed to work, come to that address. As I was about the leave, the child spoke and said, “Merry Christmas sir.” I said the same to both of them and left.

In the days and months that passed after her husband was hired by me, I began to discuss about his child’s medical needs. By God’s grace the child was cured and I became like a second father.

As for the truck, I had it restored and it is now properly maintained. As for the spirits, they never appeared again. Whether it was just a dream or it actually occurred, I probably may never be sure and I hope my story will impart a lesson that may never be forgotten.
