I have finally figured out why I love patina so much. It’s because I despise paint, a lot. Of all the things I do to make or build something it’s always the paint that I have trouble with. I stripped the original blue off the 510 UTE!! and thought I’d repaired the cracks in the bodywork caused by a falling object, not well enough apparently. I resprayed the cast last night and was very happy with the finish of the new paint as it was much smoother than the first attempt. My happiness was short lived as I discovered the cracks had reappeared when I reassembled the UTE!! As some effort went into this stage of the custom I thought I may as well share it here. My wife dosen’t care about this important stuff as much as I do and some of you here may.

So this is the color I wanted when I started this build. Even though I knew this paint was to be stripped again I added the silver details to get an idea what I’ll hopefully end up with. I am much happier with this finish as its very smooth and not as thick this time and the body crease is visible again. It was smoothed over the first time round as I used spray putty on the whole cast. Next time I’ll mask areas that I don’t need it on, you live and learn.

If you look at the B pillar the crack is clearly evident. I couldn’t actually see it until I looked at the photos on screen. I really think it’s time to visit the optometrist, seriously.

Yes the silver is a little off this time, practice makes perfect I’m told....

Now some arty type shots in memory of the second paint job.

The bodywork was not right either. The door line on the sill and pillar still needed more filling and sanding. The crack opening up was a kind of a relief as it meant that no matter what the paint had to be redone anyway.

Just a quick film clip of the UTE!! going into an Acetone bath. Not that exciting really but if your bored and there’s nothing on TV then it’s an option.
