Are we Missing Something?

I’ve found a strange thing with the way the axles are mounted on the ‘69 VW Squareback. I have pulled a few casts apart and this is the only cast I’ve found so far from HW that has a different method of mounting the axles to the base. It looks to me like there was a plan to have suspension on the cast, anyone know if that’s the case?

The 3 bases on the left have the normal method of axle attachment with the tabs in the center of the base. The VW base on the right is a lot different, it has crimped axle housings on the outer part of the base but more curiously there are those bumps cast into the base.

My thoughts are that those crimped housings would have been left as vertical slots and those ‘bumps’ were to locate some kind of spring to hold the axle in place and provide the suspension of course.

What say you? Anyone know any more about this?
