Here is my entry for the 1/64 class today: Mickey Thompson’s Challenger I record-setting Bonneville land speed racer made by none other than Hot Wheels. On the morning of September 9, 1960 this car achieved a top speed of 406.60 mph, making Mr. Thompson the fastest man in the world.
After being turned down by Chrysler, Thompson was able to successfully obtain four Pontiac 389 engines, which were then each attached to a LaSalle 3-speed transmission. The shift from First to Second happened at 210 mph (!!), while the 2-3 upshift came at 325 mph. Two of the engines were reported to be 414cid strokers, while the other two were 44ocid strokers. To top it all off, GMC 6-71 superchargers and fuel injection were added to each one.
I stumbled across this car in a local antique mall. It was one of 4 cars in a spectacular set by Hot Wheels in their 100% line. I was able to buy this set and the 2-car American Graffiti 100% set (along with a Johnny Lightning 240sx thrown in for good measure) all for $40 cash (no tax). I feel I got quite a good deal, as this set alone on ebay goes for approximately $40 to $50. Highs include the removable engine cover and opening cockpit, while lows consist of slightly excessive panel gaps around the aforementioned engine compartment cover and a place on one of the engines where the chrome is missing. All in all, though, I just love this car. Here are some more pics for your enjoyment, and thanks for considering me when voting. ‘MURICA indeed!!
