Couldn't control myself

I was in town today doing a little Christmas shopping, so naturally I stopped by Walmart to check out the diecasts. I didn’t really find any HW, and didn’t feel like digging too deep, and there were maybe 3 Jurassic Park Matchbox on the pegs so no luck there either. But then I looked down at the larger models and found a few things. First was a ‘74 Maverick. I’ve kinda got a thing for more pedestrian cars so I picked it up. Right behind it was a 69 F-100, and, living up to my user name, I just had to have that too. The rest I saw were a couple of Vette’s, and Impalas, which I wasn’t really interested in, but I was a big curious, so I dug a little, and lo and behold in the very back I found a 92 Silverado 454 SS! Well, I didn’t really plan on buying three cars, but my pickup collection is severely lacking, and I couldn’t put the Maverick down, so I grabbed them all. At $10 each though I don’t feel bad at all. All of the models are MotorMax brand, which seem to be hit or miss for quality models, but these are decent. I’ll give a short review of each below.

Exterior: 6/10 Detailing is nice, emblems are placed right, trim and door handles are painted and everything seems pretty nice in general.

Interior: 3/10. It has an interior and it looks to resemble the Mavericks. Seats are generic, everything is black plastic, the steering wheel is upside down, and the gauges are stickers. Still, it’s not horrible, and a little extra detailing will go a long way.

Engine: 5/10 Detailing is actually pretty nice, but it’s all one piece of molded plastic. Once again, a little custom detailing will go a long way.

Features: 4/10 Doors open, hood opens, it kinda steers, and the steering wheel moves with the wheels. That’s about all it has.

Value: 9/10 For $10 it’s a really nice model, the interior and engine need more detailing, but as a stationary display it looks pretty good.

Exterior: 6/10 Like the Maverick, details are decent and accurate, trim and emblems are painted on but are in the right place and look good at a distance.

Interior: 3/10 Once again, it resembles the real thing, but is generic, on piece, and the gauges are stickers. Again, some custom detailing will go a long way.

Engine: 1/10 There’s something there that resembles an engine I guess, and the details suck. I’ve got a plastic model of a Lightning engine that I think I’m going to try to custom into this.

Features: 2/10 Doors open, hood opens, that’s it. The steering doesn’t work, and the worst offense, especially for a pickup, is that the tailgate doesn’t open.

Value: 7/10 Not as good as the Maverick, but for $10 it’s hard to go wrong. There is definitely a lot left to be desired, but at the end of the day it will look decent on a shelf.

Exterior: 6/10 About the same story, details are decent, but the windshield wipers are missing, and there’s that big trailer hitch for some reason. I think one thing that will really help this model out is filling in the back space of the grille black. Other than that I have very little complaint.

Interior: 3/10 Same story as before, decent resemblance, but clearly on piece and cheap, detailing will help a fair amount. One thing I did notice on this model is that the gauges seem to be a very generic gauge, and all read 20-40-60, with the respective gauge emblem (gas, voltage, etc) below it. Below is a blurry picture, but you might be able to see what I mean.

Engine: 2/10 I didn’t get a pic of this, but it’s basically between the F-100 and the Maverick, still cheap and generic, but with some decent detailing. You certainly can’t tell that it’s a Chevy BB.

Features: 5/10 Steering works, doors open, hood opens, and most importantly, the tailgate opens! The tailgate also has a cheap but effective way of latching shut. For a pickup, these are about all the features you can get, but it’s still a basic model and various features could definitely be added.

Value: 7/10 Same as the others, not a bad deal at all for $10, a little detailing will add a lot, and overall I just really like this model because I’ve never seen a model of a 454SS before.

Overall I’m happy with my purchase, all of these will likely go under the diecast knife for some detailing and customization, but for what they are I can’t complain.
