Some of you expressed interest in how I make my dioramas; this post is for you. Up to this point the only thing I’ve done is cover the wooden base with spackle. This post is purely showing how I make the paved roads.
I use and thoroughly enjoy Apple Barrel paint. I used their Pavement color, and I used the largest small brush I have. The one pictured is about an inch wide. This size takes longer to do what I want, but I also have more control over ‘where’ the paint goes.
This is what I mean by controlling where the paint goes. The smaller brush let’s me keep the paint where I want it. A larger brush would be like a cannonball, it’s a bit overkill in my opinion. Besides, taking your time is better because it allows you to make changes on the fly if necessary.
The roads are painted, hooray!
Next up, drybrushing the roads. Drybrushing gives something a ‘used’ look. I used granite color for this. There are a lot of tutorials online for this, but here is a quick rundown.
Using a very small amount of paint, dip in just the tip of your brush.
Then proceed to wipe away any excess paint off the brush. Then ever so gently, apply the paint. Do not use force.

This pic is after I drybrushed the whole thing. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the exact look I desired. I wanted something a bit darker.
This is the beauty of drybrushing though, I drybrushed the pavement color back on then re-did the granite color even lighter than before. If you compare the above two pics, you should notice a slight difference.
