Gotta Go Farther

It was great to get out there a few weeks ago. After a successful day wheeling and getting my lures hydrated, I got to take in the stars, belch fire and wake up to a cup of delicious, gritty cowboy coffee.

I also woke up to neighbors.

With all the AWD cars of today, the 4WD trails and forest roads of yesteryear more accessible. In addition, Covid is driving us all up into the hills to enjoy the fresh air and change of scenery. Whenever someone asks why I have my truck setup the way it is, I say “Gotta get out past the Subarus”. That distance has gotten significantly longer and more difficult. These more capable AWD cars of today are good at doing what they do. I have even had a friend tag along over Tin Cup Pass in her Rav4 on all seasons, god bless her. She made it.

Same advice I gave her and could work for all of you out there in Honda CRVs, Rav4s AudiQs and VolvoXCs, etc.

  • AWD/4WD is amazing, trust it and your rig. It can also get you in trouble.
  • They are well suited to take these forest roads if you pick your lines in the difficult spots
  • Know where your tires are.
  • Also, tread lightly, camp in designated spots, and for the love of everything holy, please clean up after yourself and don’t burn our forests down.

In return for the above, I will hook you up, haul you out, give directions, share my campsite and give you the most important symbol of backcountry street respect; the mountain wave. You know it. You earned it.

Imma keep going.
