One and a half weeks ago it was finally time for EurOppomeet at the Nürburgring 2018! Finally made it to the meet with my own car after I missed out on the Alps and most importantly Wales! So for this EurOppo meet I was super pumped and couldn’t wait to conquer the Nordschleife by myself. On Saturday morning it was time for me to hit the road heading Northwest. I beat the estimated destination by 15 minutes arriving at Lidl in Adenau at around 10:45. That’s after I missed the Lidl parking lot two times. Blurpletoyotadishwasher was already waiting beside his Suzuki Cappucino there as I pulled up but I wasn’t sure if that was him. BvdV arrived 15 minutes later and the guy next to zur Cappucino turned out to be an Opponaut. Anyways, we chatted for a bit, got some snacks and drinks and decided to go watch the VLN race after dr. Canard was delaying duurtlang’s and gmporschenut’s departure to the Ring.

Breidscheid is a great spot to watch the race and rather close to the Lidl we were parking.

Schaefft eventually made it and we then decided to look for another spot to watch the race. BvdV really took some great photos. Check them out on his post. Later on after the race had just ended we were joined by Dr. Canard in his automatic (I know, wtf), gmporschenut with his rental Miata (also autotragic) and duurtlang with his Peugeot 205 CTi turbo. Duurtlang used a 2.0 turbo engine out of a 1996 Lancia Zeta minivan. Sounds worse than it actually is as the result is very damn good.

The weather wasn’t looking too good and it started to rain a bit so someone came up with the idea of hitting the Nordschleife the same day. So that’s what we did. Well, except gmporschenut who rode shotgun in schaefft’s MkVIII. Let me tell you, driving on the wet Ring after a race is very scary. I had extreme understeer and even almost lost it at one corner. Dr. Canard even spun out. Twice. But we all made it out alive and sorta well. 30 Euros well invested I guess.

EurOppo meet wasn’t just about cars this time. After the rain has gotten worse and our previous scary lap around the Nordschleife on Saturday we all decided to do visit what the Eifel region is known for besides the Nürburgring and rainy weather - vulcans. Or in our case a pumice mine the Romans used for a long time. At some point Out with a W arrived in his Miata with the right transmission. Time well spent there.

📍Deutschlandeck, Koblenz. That’s a statue of Kaiser Wilhelm from the late 19th century that you could actually take the steps up to a platform. The view of the Rhine and Mosel river was amazing. We took the gondola over the Rhine river afterwards.

Sadly I had to split from the group on Sunday evening because I had to go to work the next day.

15/10 would do again.
