TFW...

update -  I’m off the month of July, more or less. I’m actually fine with that. LONG story short, people stuck up for me and I could have had it a lot worse.

You get a meeting invite for 2:45pm on a Friday, from your boss, and the other people invited to the meeting are a division director you work with (but not directly for) and someone from HR.

Fuck.

HOWEVER!!

I believe this will be a furlough, not a straight-up layoff. My actual job is pretty secure, I am very much needed and they don’t pay me that much either, so I’m reasonably confident of returning to work before the school year begins, probably August.

AND. My kids are increasingly likely to be without summer camp options, so we’ll need full-time child care ... so ... problem solved. I actually will very much welcome having the summer off. I just hope I’m welcomed back in the fall / late summer, and the university doesn’t collapse after all this.

So I’m torn. The last few weeks have been really, really challenging. I don’t know how much of that is because I’ve been trying to work on top of taking care of the kids, and everything else... but I may have a chance to find out, for better or for worse. Financially, we’ll be OK. My benefits would continue through work and I can collect unemployment.

One thing is for sure, I’d be burning through a lot of $1.50/gal gas in the boat. Hell yeah. And putting a lot of miles on my mountain bike. I am categorically incapable of boredom, so I will have no trouble filling the time. Harvesting firewood, household projects, yard work, building mountain bike trails, hiking, biking, swimming, exploring with the kids; grocery shopping and cooking and laundry.

In any case, wish me luck.

this is a fun way to burn 37 gallons of gas at a time, especially when it’s cheap
