
It starts with a simple set of candle holders like these.
Mom and I are quite similar, being iconoclasts, thrift store shopping and eating at dives and whole-in-the-wall restaurants. Dad and my sister prefer tradition, fancy retail stores and fine dining.
Anyway, back to Christmas. The candle holders would come out and mom and I would switch the letters to read ‘LEON’ instead. Dad or sister would switch them back, and mom or I would reverse them again. It was all in good fun, but sometimes the stodgier amongst us didn’t seem to view it that way.
I told this story to a couple of nurses at the hospital this evening. I don’t think it was intentional, but one of them addressed me as Leon as I departed...
