These numbers are based on acceleration and weight only but 191/295 at this elevation is astonishing. Right where they should be too. 4300 rpm hp peak and 3300 torque peak.

There is a rumor that says that Toyota intended the FZ to be the land cruiser engine long into the future and they had plans to add VVT to the exhaust cam in the next generation (2FZ-FE) which would have made the power band a little better than pooping out at 4400 rpm. I can only imagine a 5700 rpm vvt 2fz-fe. They were claiming around 315-320 lbs-ft which at a higher revving 5000 rpm hp peak would have been around 280 hp

What an engine that would have been.

Then the 80 series became WAAAAY too popular for its own good and Toyota started selling the LX450 and customers demanded more luxury and that, at the time, meant V8. This forced them to ditch the solid axle and go IFS for width considerations and, well, the rest is history with the 200 being an extremely capable stealth wealth limo.

It makes a lot of sense when you think about it because in other markets they came out with the 105 series, which is...what I suspect...would have been the 100 series here had they not switched to a v8. (shown above is our pal Rufant’s fzj105 presently out and about doing land cruisering things.) It had the updated 1fz-fe with a few more ponies but no VVT (no more money for it) but it retained a solid front axle with locker options and the standy 4 speed auto or 5 speed manual. It wouldn’t make sense to make the 105 unless they had already been going down that path. For Toyota is was probably the right move, but also the wrong one. Shame on you Toyota...

I mean the UZ engine is great and it solves a lot of the problems of the FZ (weight especially) but can you even imagine getting in the US a dual solid axle 280hp straight 6 100 series? man that makes me sweaty. What were we talking about again? or right. Those rumores. take them as you will.
