Off Topic - Why Advertise?

Last night I was at a beer garden watching the debate/football game and an ad came on for Party City. This is a prime time ad at 8:30-ish on a Thursday night that had to have cost a fuck load of money. Me and every dude at my table was like, “WTF? Are the people who don’t know Party City exists?”

What’s the value proposition for a seasonal store to advertise on a national level? Does someone actually collect data on how ads affect people’s behavior or has everyone just been doing it for so long that it hasn’t occurred to anyone to question the value of it?
