Identification quiz

No one tackled my easy pop quiz last time, so I’ll try again.

This time I don’t know the answer, although I have a theory.

While wandering Shakamak State Park this weekend, along trail 1 I found three instances of this odd construction. Any guesses?

If it helps, they were quite close to what would have been creeks before the reservoirs were dammed.
