Boxed in...

...where I tell the heartwarming tale of how we rescued a box. With knitting.

Many moons ago...yeah nah...that’s bullshit. It was last month...and a bit...

Now... despite weeks of indecision and home schooling...we are done. Mostly.

There is a new roof because old roof makes mockery of the very idea of roof. The actual roof of this container is as structural as a pair of original 1990s era acid wash jeans...you could walk on/in it but bits could fall through/out. Those bits could be quite... delicate.

The new roof came as a result of dismantling another structure on our property which held together by screws, gravity, luck, mass and chemistry. Unsurprisingly, demolition required the skills of a surfer, a tiny angle grinder and 45 minutes. Plus another 3 hours of picking shit up.

Useful shit was moved to the box...other shit got moved to the dry dump...

And then we get to knitting. I can weld but I can’t knit but my welding is like knitting. Suffice to say that the roof structure on our container is not going anywhere because it is both welded and knitted to the container...and screwed too.

I have welded a girder truss to the box. Then I’ve strapped and screwed it down for good measure. And some more steel top hat as rafters and battens held together with screws and some corrugated iron roofing and...it’s a still a busted arse shipping container but with a kick arse hair-do.

And then we put a floor in it!

That’s our old back verandah in there covering up the mother and father of all of Dodgy Brothers Inc. ‘Best of Sub-flooring Repairs’ collection. Doesn’t it look ace?! It’ll be even better when I figure out how to screw it down!

Suffice to say...restomodding an aged shipping container is somewhere between restoring a paddock found 1970s Alfa Romeo and owning a used Lamborghini.

All this to store some timber...some say he was off his twig. And yet...what a post.
