GPS and Overlanding.

Okay fellow adventurists.

Last winter, while out in the Big Bend area of Texas, my Dash mounted Tom Tom would not pick up any signals. The gal leading the trails had been out there before so most of the trails were in her head.

My Samsung Galaxy S3 also had problems triangulating where I was. (I now have an S5, thanks to work)

I’ve been doing a little research and have heard pretty good things about Gaia GPS for Android. Backcountry Navigator is another one.

As of now, I plan on putting one of these on my phone, but I’m not opposed to getting a mount for my tablet and having that in my rig.

What I like about these is supposedly you can download the maps/trails to your phone and use them “offline”, IE: don’t need a cell phone signal to update your location, just GPS satellites.

For those of you that have something to locate the trail, plot your trail (Breadcrumbs) and get yourself out of the trail, what is your preference? I’m heading out west this summer and want to be able to figure out where the trails begin and end.
