Upgrading the Base Camp

As I was looking for more ways to increase our storage capacity when max loaded I was reminded of a pretty cool camping trailer I discovered several years go. I have continued to search for used ones and it just so happened I finally found one for something that I might be willing to pay. It is a 2014 SylvanSport Go 740 miles away in Wilmington, NC (I’m in Pensacola) for almost half off the cost of new. The pictures looked pretty decent, even close ups of the underside and interior of the wheels. My wife has also wanted one for a while. We decided to try and go for it and we were able to make a deal.

Before I could go get it I needed to actually add the wiring for a trailer. I found a Curt kit in etrailer.com made for my generation Impreza and had it sent via 2 day shipping. It was not as easy as it was advertised because the freaking plugs are WAY too big to fit through the factory grommets in the manner they described. I had to slice them open quite a bit and then try to silicone repair them after.

Since I was running a hot wire from the battery, and I happened to have a 12 volt outlet laying around from the Titan, I decided to add that to the cargo area as well. Admittedly, I didn’t have all the connections available to make it work at the first go, but at least I put it in place.

Last Friday I dropped my wife and son off at the airport for their pre-planned trip to visit family, headed back home to get the dogs, and hit the road. We set up camp at an RV park in Alabama because I didn’t exactly know how far I was going to make it. I didn’t pre-plan stop locations because of that.

The next day we made it all the way to Wilmington and met the guy. Everything seemed to check out so I paid, we signed the bill of sale, and moved it to the Impreza. He checked the lights for me: brakes and turn signals worked, but no running lights. Shit. Well, no driving at night then.

The dogs and I made it to around Camden, SC and started looking for a place to set up the Go and camp for the night. Of course the skies opened up on us as soon as I pulled in. No pictures of that night as I was just trying to set it up for the first time, in the rain, and corral the two soaking wet dogs.

The next morning we packed everything up and hit the road for home. Once home I opened it back up and set up my REI Taj 3 as well to let everything dry out. I also had to begin the complete garage re-organization project, which is going to take a while and involve donating, selling, and moving things, in order to try and fit the Go inside the garage with the GS and still be able to fit the Impreza as well.

The SylvanSport doesn’t look super off-roady, but it reports 13” of clearance as well so not too bad. I think with the planned Impreza upgrades, this combo could do pretty well as long as we remember it isn’t a legit 4x4.
