Airing Down

Captain DayTrip’s post about driving on South Padre Island got me thinking about my tire pressure. What is everyone using to air their tires up after offroading? I’m thinking about getting a CO2 tank and securing it to my roof basket. I can find used, certified, and full 20 lb CO2 tanks on Craigslist for about $100.

I have an air compressor, but I’d need to get an inverter that puts out at least 1,300W in order to run it. It would also take up a bunch of space. The quality little electric pumps are about the same price as a used CO2 tank, but it seems like they’d take a while to air up larger tires.

On my 17" non bead-locked wheels, I’m comfortable going down to 12 psi, which would then need to be aired back up to 35 psi for highway travel. If I know there’s a gas station nearby I could air up to 20 psi then use the compressor at the station. I think a 20lb CO2 tank should be good for a few air downs.

So, what’s everyone using?
