So the Cummins R2.8 diesel is officially on sale. According to Fred its going to cost about 9 grand.

Its also important to note that its going to be 50 state emissions legal, which is a big deal.

Sure you can LS for less (but not much when all is said and done) and there will need to be some work done on adapting transmissions, but its honestly a lot cheaper than I was expecting.

Looking at an 80 series swap:

Realistic 200 crank hp left on my motor, take away 3% power for every 1000 feet elevation means just around town I am running with 170 crank hp at best.

Truthfully it wouldn’t feel any slower with 160 hp at lower revs than the 1FZ and its considerably lighter as well. There is a strong wink and nod to those power figures as well knowing that they are tunable to much higher.

I wouldn’t care if the truck is the same kinda slow, if it got better mileage. I would hope this would up my mileage by about 50%. going from a daily of 13 to a daily of nearly 20 would make all the difference. Especially since it would mean never needing to carry extra fuel off road, since 300 miles of hard touring is plenty of range for me.

Im not considering it except as a window shopper, but it is an interesting idea.
