Yay or Nay?

Never mind Hillary or Bernie, Trump or Cruz - would you elect to mount the spare on the front of your rig?

The owner of this very nicely equipped XJ did.

I can see a few advantages:

  • Eliminate the need for a clumsy and heavy rear bumper wheel carrier

  • Spare wheel not blocking your rearward vision
  • Easy to mount and remove
  • You can cream wayward deer with a little bit of extra cushioning
  • Looks tough in a 1970s Ford pick-up kind of way

Disadvantages:

  • Probably does not improve fuel economy or engine cooling
  • Impairs forward visibility
  • Precludes winch use
  • Makes access to the engine awkward
  • Looks sorta dumb in a 1970s Ford pick-up kind of way

Personally, I don’t think I’d go this route with my Jeep, purely for aesthetic reasons. And remember, only Land Rovers are allowed to rock hood-top spare wheel mounts.
