Overlanding at Home

There are times when having a collection of camping gear comes in handy when you are not actually camping.

For example, we sometimes pitch the big tent on our verandah to provide a guest with a bedroom when we don’t have a bedroom spare. Other times the camp kitchen is raided for that extra pot when the catering needs overwhelm the normal tool supply.

This weekend past gave us another example:

A series of storms rolled over our place on Friday and pruned a few trees. Top gust was 85 km/h over our place so it just skimmed use but it slammed into our nearest town with more force and decapitated quite a few houses.

It also took out the regional electricity grid for nigh on 24 hours. So on Saturday morning, I pulled out the Engel, the deep cycle battery and the solar panels (out of shot in the bright sunlight) so we had cold milk and non-perishing perishables plus charged lights, phones and tablets. We were sorted!

So there is a real positive to having all that expensive gear kicking about waiting for the next opportunity to get out there! So don’t feel too guilty about investing in some more good stuff!
