National Lam-Hooning Christmas Vacation

After a failed attempt to plan trip to see the Lucin Sun Tunnels on the west border of Utah last week for the winter solstice. The sun tunnels are something some hippy artist decided to put out in the middle of nowhere to line up with the winter/summer solstice. I have been wanting to check it out but it’s really an excuse to go explore the Old Railroad Grade road. This road goes on the North side of the Salt Lake and is not paved thus meeting minimum off-roading requirements. Over Christmas Dinner my brother-in-law, sister-in-law and their boy decided to join us on this mini adventure the next day.

We set out a bit later than we should have but we originally decided to just go out there, explore around and when it almost got dark we would just turn around and head home. The road started past the Golden Spike Site...you know where the East and West of the continental railroad met a long-ass time ago. The views did not disappoint...

Despite snowing about six inches over the weekend there had been plenty of traffic over the road and after being on it about 20 minutes we realized we were covering much more ground than we had originally had anticipated , after a quick conversation we decoded to bomb it to see if we could make it to Lucin to see the sunset through the sun tunnels.

The kids and my wife were having a good time. I was having a deep conversation with my 5 year old about how the Salt Lake came to be, what a basin is and why ingesting salt water is not a good idea. He was excited about the conversation topics as you can see.

After about a half an hour to sunset I decided to deviate from the more established path and take the straight-shot to the road. Unfortunately there was a lot more snow on this route and there was only 1 vehicle before me that had driven it. Still I was determined to overcome my obstacles ...must resist over dramatization ...

My wheel width did not match the previous vehicles so high speeds weren’t really attainable for this course and the sun was fading fast.

Did you think I really cared that much? Do you really need to watch the sunset through a concrete tube? This sunset suited me just fine.

We pulled over about this time before sunset to let the kids run around and play in the snow. I busted out the 2 burner stove and heated up some water for some hot chocolate and take the obligatory Tacoma bro pose pic.

After we went to Wendover to find something to eat. We found this little restaurant that 4.5 stars. Bottom line don’t trust the reviews from the people of Wendover, NV...not even 2 stars. At least my 1 year old was happy.
