While I’ve managed to keep the doorhandles and bondo as more of a hobby as of late, I’m still getting calls about dashes.
We’ve been here before, I wired this 65 gmc from bumper to bumper. Because of that I’m often the first call. The only unrestored piece on this truck was the dash bezel and gauges. They were fine, but not as shiny as the rest of the truck. Sent away for restoration, they were out of the (otherwise finished) truck for a year, when re-installed, the temp gauge was pinned on hot. “ground issue” according to the mechanic. Call the wiring guy.
To be honest, it almost always is a ground issue.

I don’t have a good before picture, but the problem was that the restored needle was stuck against the gauge face hard enough that it didn’t move. Pictured is my method of re-curving the needle.
No longer pinned on hot. I’m sure the place that restored the gauges checked them before the went out, but ‘works on the bench’ and ‘works while fully assembled and installed’ are not always the same thing. It wasn’t the problem I was called in for specifically, but a car got fixed today. I like it when they’re fixed.
