According to this site, in 1903 Massachussets Massachusetts (I’ve spent my whole life in this state and it still takes me two or more tries to spell it right!) became the first jurisdiction in the world to register cars and the first to issue license plates. The plates were blue with white lettering, and they were made of porcelain.
