FAH - I decided to get serious, I want us in the top 500

Decided to get serious about my points production. I’d really like to see us hit the top 500. I wasn’t doing all that I can for that goal. Prior to today I had my computer (Ryzen 7 3700X, 32gb, 2070 Super) folding basically full time, although dropping the CPU when I was using it, and then when I’m playing a game the GPU obviously takes a hit.

Then I had my son’s PC (i5 2500K, 16gb, 1080) using the GPU for all night and the CPU here and there. However, this thing was throttling itself because it was getting too hot. It was uncomfortable touching the circa 2010 (with only 1 120mm fan) case after it had been folding or gaming. So that was less than ideal.

Looking around, I had a bunch of stuff I could use to solve these problems and get my PPD up. I had the former contents of my PC before the Ryzen upgrade, an RX580, and a Rosewill case that I bought a few years back and never touched. All sitting in boxes.

So I built my son a new PC using the i5 7600k with 16GB and his 1080 in the Rosewill case which has good airflow and fans. Then I put the RX580 in the i5 2500k system that he was using and set it up with an ancient 5400RPM drive I pulled from my iMac years ago. Threw Win 10 on it, and set it up as a headless folding box in the guest room. For good measure I put FAH on my 2013 iMac as well. Then I worked out how to use my PC’s FAH advanced client to remotely control everything from my screen.

If everything runs constantly, I’m good for around 3.2 million PPD (sorry. 3.2 Oppoflops a day). Of course, that’s not realistic since he and I use our systems during the day, so I figure I’m realistically going to do 2.5 or so a day.

That should put a dent in our rankings. Thank goodness for free electricity. If my wife were driving and charging her Volt much now, I’d probably end up owing the power company with all of this running.
