Tropical storm Theta has formed in the Atlantic:
This gives us the most tropical storms/hurricanes of any season on record, surpassing 2005's count. Our 28th named storm was already a record, but only because one tropical storm from 2005 was identified retroactively and not named. Now we are truly in new territory. 2005 still had a significantly higher average storm intensity though. Theta is expected to grow into a hurricane, but also to move harmlessly (unless you are a sailor) east across the Atlantic before dissipating.
