Photo Mode in Video games

I’ve never been very good at taking pictures in video games, but since i’ve been playing Art of Rally, i’ve been bitten by the bug of inspiration.

Two things have combined to reach a critical mass and get me into the photo mode. Firstly, the game is incredible looking. Love the art style. Secondly, the game has a really bad set of replay cameras, they always travel at the exact same speed as the car while maintaining a set distance from the vehicle. However, photo mode can be accessed during replays and photo mode includes a button that will unpause the replay at any point, while still letting the player move around the camera, adjust zoom etc.

The upshot is that it works as a defacto ‘drone mode’ which has brought about a whole new set of challenges for me. Trying to time things out to get the perfect drone shot of my replay while keeping the car in-frame can be really challenging and fun!

Whiiiiich eventually led to me spending way too much time making this kinda stupid drifting music video in the game. Every single shot in this video was set up manually, by me. Which was a lot of work for what essentially looks like a replay from any number of big budget racing games. Oh well. It makes me happy, hopefully it makes a couple of you guys happy as well.

And yeah. Maybe no Dodge Neon, but certainly plenty of neon in the aesthetic and soundtrack.
