I still want another one, preferably a Westfalia, even though I have no plans to go camping. For some odd reason I love this box on wheels, and have since the first time I saw one in 1979. Between me and my mother we’ve owned three of these these things, spanning the full range from 1980 to 1991.
I was just reading a Road & Track article reviewing the 1980 model. They said that its acceleration was reasonable and could easily keep up with traffic. The 0-60 time listed was 21.2 seconds. 21.2. And these days people say that my Mazda5 is frightfully slow, with its 0-60 time of 8.3 seconds. And the braking on the Vanagon? They said the 60-0 performance was quite good, but they couldn’t do 80-0 because they didn’t have enough room a their testing location to get it up to 80...
